Enron and WorldCom have become synonymous with everything that is wrong with business in American because of their shady accounting practices. I don't want to see this stigma spread to the the US dollar. For this reason I ask that you support S604 which auditing the Fed to remove the uncertainty around the Fed's recent activities.

Thank you for embracing the spirit of openness in such critical matters,

[music |Finlandia (Be Still My Soul) — Jean Sibleious]

I am very happy to hear President Obama come clean on the sad state of the federal budget. While hearing about our deficit is regrettable, it is by far preferable to the past practices of hiding our deficit with shady accounting. For this I applaud the current administration.

As we continue our deficit spending, it is imperative that we audit our nations largest bank, the Federal Reserve. Congress has this right demand accountability and I wish it to be exercised.

By operating in secrecy, we allow the specter of abuse to roam unchecked. This financial irresponsibility has historically has been the downfall of nations from Rome to Zimbabwe. Dictators like Hitler have found a willing audience with a people whose hard work is not enough to overcome government spending.

Please stand in support of HR 1207 The Federal Reserve Transparency Act which has been drafted to restore accountability to our central bank, the dollar and our future.

This bill has a few dozen cosponsors, but the congress needs a nudge to move against the power financial lobbyists. Please consider writing a note (or copying this one) to your congressman. Just enter your zip code into www.congress.org to gain access to their inbox. My congressman has become a cosponsor since I sent this note, maybe your email will tip the scales.

Thanks,
Nick

Bill of Right we still want you [Jan. 14th, 2009|01:47 pm]

I've been heartened by Obama's recent comments on national security:

“Under my administration, the United States does not torture. We will abide by the Geneva Conventions. We will uphold our highest values and ideals. We must adhere to values as vigilantly as we protect our safety.”
-- President-elect Barack Obama

"I don't want to be ambiguous about this. We are going to close Guantanamo and we are going to make sure that the procedures we set up are ones that abide by our Constitution."
-- President-elect Barack Obama

The American Freedom Agenda Act (HR 3835) is a piece of existing legislation which codifies these themes. Please consider supporting or reintroducing it as you set an example to your fellow congressmen—and the world—of our renewed commitment to the Bill of Rights.

I realize I am preaching to the choir when voice my opposition for another TARP, since you are probably well acquainted with Tennessean's love for small government. However, another TARP is back, so I ask that you go one step beyond simply defending financial accountability.

This step is to pass "Read The Bill's Act" along with "One Subject at a Time Act". It is embarrassing the way the last bailout bill grew from the original three pages to over a hundred, and finally upwards of 400. It smacks of corruption trough obfuscation.

Finally, I'd like you to consider a radical idea expounded by Ayn Rand in Atlas Shrugged. Return our country to the gold standard through the Federal Reserve Board Abolition Act. Financial discipline and honest money is _THE_ way to restore our competitive edge against China.

I am enough of a realist to know this won't happen; nevertheless, please continue your courageous crusade towards a government we can be proud of by sponsoring Read the Bill's Act and One Subject at a Time Act.

Keep America Great [Dec. 8th, 2008|01:11 pm]

[music |The Nutcracker Suite - The Brian Setzer Orchestra]

To: George Bush, Lamar Alexander, Bob Corker, John Duncan Jr.

It broadly accepted that the free market economy is most responsible for making America great.

The free market has transformed China from a backwards third world nation to the fastest rising economic star on the planet.

The 'free' in free market comes from government non-intervention and is best contrasted with the Soviet planned economy.

One should not, however, forget the darker side of free markets: creative destruction. When we enter a recession, only the strong survive. This is good for the consumer as competitions drive prices down, but it is also good for the economy. Creative destruction frees up scarce resources for other—more productive—businesses; creating more—better—jobs.

The United Auto Worker's union is and will continue to be a glass ceiling on the American auto industry, unless our government has the courage to let our car companies go out of business. The only people that benefit long term from a rescue of GM are the stock holders and the union employees who have artificially inflated wages.

Please keep America strong, and resist the short-sighted urge to "help."
